This February, the Mayor Gallery will showcase a retrospective of the work of Ivor Abrahams, R.A. The exhibition will trace through the different periods of Ivor's work, beginning with his early painted figurative sculpture of Bathers, alongside his most recent creation 'Totems of Suburbia' - taking his earlier pieces investigating the kitsch suburban garden full circle.

A graduate of St. Martin’s and the Camberwell School of Art, and a member of he Royal Academy, Abrahams innovative approach to sculpture has led to him becoming one of Britain’s leading artists. Exploring various themes of British identity in his work, he has produced an extensive catalogue playing with images of Urban and Suburban life, the traditional British garden, and in his previous show at the Mayor Gallery worked with the curious character of the owl.

Abrahams plays with scale – from his somewhat haunting latex foliage, to his 3 metre snow owl collaged with photographs of man-made materials – juxtaposing the natural and the manufactured environment. This retrospective will exhibit the various manifestations of Abrahams work, each of which has constantly challenged the trends and attitudes in the art world.

Painted Sculpture will coincide with an exhibition curated by the Henry Moore Institute at Leeds City Art Gallery entitled By Leafy Ways. Recently acquired for the permanent collection, this body of work from the 1970s includes prints, collages, cut-outs, reliefs and flocked, life-size sculptures of shrubs. The two shows will work concurrently to help a younger audience re-discover the span of Abraham’s work and how his career has influenced future generations of artists.

Abrahams has exhibited frequently throughout Europe and the United States, being launched into fame with an exhibition of his garden sculptures at the Kölnischer Kunstverein, Cologne in 1973. He has exhibited many times at the Mayor Gallery since 1976.
